One Student's Inspirational Story

Alexandra Weiner was first introduced to chess in a College for Kids course. Now she is a state chess champion. Lynn Boyar, former Director of Norwalk Community College’s Special Programming and College for Kids program, says, “There’s no question that College for Kids provided the spark and the framework for this student to become a state and national chess champion. Here at NCC, children discover innate talents they never knew they had,” said Boyar.

Alexandra started studying chess with College for Kids instructor Alex Eydelman three years ago at the age of seven. When she showed a strong interest and enjoyment of the game, her parents arranged for Eydelman to continue to tutor her privately. Now ten years old, Alexandra has gone on to place number one in her age group in Connecticut. She’s competed in over a dozen competitions throughout the country and is also ranked in the top ten in her age group nationally. She attends Greens Farm School and resides with her family in Westport.

“It’s wonderful to see children come into the College for Kids program and just click with something that catches their interest, and have it become something that they can enjoy for the rest of their lives,” said Boyar.
