Tea the Traditional Way

The Japanese Language and Culture Club sponsored a traditional Japanese tea ceremony on March 5 performed by Kiyomi Soejima, a graduate of the Omotesenke School of tea ceremony. The school has been in existence since the 17th century.

Dressed in a kimono with an obi sash, Soejima demonstrated Chanoyu, the traditional preparation and presentation of matcha, a powdered green tea. She spoke in Japanese, with continuous translation into English by a member of the Japanese Club.

The event was attended by students and community members, who sampled the tea and enjoyed Japanese sweets.
