NCC Receives 2018 TD Green Streets Grant

NCC has been awarded a 2018 TD Green Streets grant to support innovative practices in community forestry and environmental education program in low- to moderate-income neighborhoods. The TD Bank grant is administered by The Arbor Day Foundation. The NCC-led initiatives will occur during 2018.

NCC Environmental Science Professor Erica Kipp will serve as the principal investigator or research group leader for the grant. The College is collaborating with The Norwalk Housing Authority and the Norwalk Mayor’s Office to realize the goals outlined in the grant. The Norwalk Housing Authority has identified two sites in Norwalk in need of greening: a senior center and a children’s center.

Programming at the senior center will focus on horticultural therapy, using a greening component and an educational dimension, all led by Professor Kipp. Seniors will learn about and assist in taking care of trees planted at the facility this spring. Children at the children’s center will learn about seed planting, bird housing and caring for trees following a tree planting at their facility, using books, educational sessions and hands-on experiences. TD employees and volunteers from the Mayor’s office will be closely involved in the community programs.
