Movie of the Month — The Hustler — February 2

The 1961 film, "The Hustler," kicks off the Movie-of-the-Month series for the spring term. It will screen on Thursday, February 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the PepsiCo Theatre on East Campus.

The Hustler is an American classic and one of the very best films of the 1960s. It is unrelenting in its attempt to capture the grittiness, violence, bitterness and broken dreams of those who haunt the nether regions of America’s underbelly, the bars, cheap hotels, bus stations and pool halls where hungry hustlers like “Fast Eddie” are all too eager to sell their souls for a shot at glory and the money and free drinks that come with it.

Director Robert Rossen’s provides a masterpiece of survival and self-destruction in the dark underworld of professional pool, with a stellar cast that includes Paul Newman, Piper Laurie, Jackie Gleason, Rip Torn, and George C. Scott—all in peak form.

There will be a brief lecture before the film and a Q&A discussion afterwards. The screening is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Professor Gary Carlson at
