Common Read Open Mic Night

Come one, come all! Share your creative reflections on the Common Read! Poetry, speeches, short stories, skits, and musical reflections on the characters and/or themes of Girl Decoded, by Rana el Kaliouby are all welcome! The event will take place on Tuesday, October 11, at 1pm in the East Campus Art Gallery.

Snacks and refreshments will be served, and all student participants will be entered into a raffle to win a seat on a trip to the MIT Media Lab on November 14 or a $100 Amazon gift card!

Participation Requirements:

  • All interested participants should submit a written version of their performance by September 30
    • Students interested in participating should submit a written version of their performance to their FYE 101 – Freshman Seminar professor
    • Faculty, staff, and other community members interested in participating should submit a written version of their performance to the Common Read email (nk-commonread@ncc.commnet.edu)
  • Your submission should include:
    • Your name (required) and preferred pronouns (optional)
    • Estimated length of your performance
    • Title of your performance (if applicable)
    • 1 – 3 sentence personal bio (optional)
  • (Optional) If you will be using media as part of your performance (i.e. PowerPoint presentations, pre-recorded background music, videos, etc.) final copies must be submitted by October 7
    • Students should submit to their FYE 101 – Freshman Seminar professor
    • Faculty, staff, and other community members should submit to the Common Read email (nk-commonread@ncc.commnet.edu)
  • Performances should be between 1 – 5 minutes
  • Performances should have a clear relationship to the Common Read either by direct mention of a character, scene, quote, etc., or connection to a theme or topic discussed in the book
    • Examples of possible themes/topics include but are not limited to:
      • Technology
      • Emotional Intelligence
      • Business
      • Autism
      • Cultural differences
      • Education
  • Allowed reflection formats include
    • Poetry
    • Speeches
    • Short stories and/or Excerpts
    • Skits
    •  Songs
      • Songs with lyrics are preferred, but songs without lyrics will be accepted provided they are accompanied by a brief reflection on the connection between the music and the Common Read from the perspective of the performer
  • No profanity or disparaging words directed to or about another person, group of people, etc. will be accepted
  • All submissions must be original
