Ceramics I
An introductory course with an emphasis on hand building and an introduction to basic throwing. In hand building the focus will be on pinch, coil and slab methods. In throwing, cylindrical forms will be explored. Instruction in glaze application and composition will be covered.

Global Art History Prehistory to 1500 CE
The development and historical context of visual art from the prehistoric period through the inception of the early modern period (c.1500). Exploration of artifacts and historic sites as documents of past economic, political, religious and social developments and well as of cultural exchange. Museum visits strongly encouraged.

Graphic Design I
This course is designed to introduce students to visual communication through graphic design. Students practice basic studio skills with an emphasis on developing the ability to convert creative concepts into a visual medium. Topics include proper file management, computer navigation basics, fundamental techniques of the design process, and digital plagiarism. Students will learn to create a graphic identify through proper typography, image editing, page layout, portfolio development and mechanical preparation. This is a non-credit offering of Graphic Design 1 that is offered in conjunction with a credit course.

History of Graphic Design
Students will study Graphic Design as a component of visual language within historical context, identifying graphic arts within the history of art and articulating its aesthetic import and contributions to cultural development. Links between socio-political phenomena, the development of advertising and propaganda art, visual literacy, perception, type design and design practice will be examined. Course modules focus on a survey of graphic design from the invention of writing to the present, from Pre-historic cave imagery to the current digital age, the achievements that laid the groundwork for the contemporary practices of graphic design will be introduced to the student through the works of leading graphic designers, art directors, illustrators, photographers, and typographers. Major styles will be analyzed and compared, and influences identified.

Painting I
A course in the technical and aesthetic fundamentals of painting, covering construction of a canvas, selection and use of materials, basic color theory, and realistic and expressive paint handling. Students will work in both traditional and experimental painting styles. Drawing I is recommended but not required.

First Degree Reiki Training
It’s time to become the strongest member of your personal healthcare team. Learn a thorough history of Reiki ,from its ancient origins to its adaptation to the modern office, hospital, and daily life. Participants will learn about the capabilities of Reiki, Reiki principles, hand positions for healing both self and others, and receive an attunement to awaken one’s ability to utilize the energy. Participants will discuss the plentiful benefits of Reiki for both the client and practitioner, and will participate in a guided meditation to meet their Reiki Master Guide. This course includes two Reiki sessions: one as a recipient and one as a Reiki practitioner. Certificate and materials provided to each student. Please bring a blanket, pillow and your lunch to class.

Second Degree Reiki Training
Building on First Degree Reiki Training (or if you’ve taken Reiki with a different instructor), this course introduces the first three ancient, sacred Reiki symbols that are used to focus on healing, and will learn how to conduct a formal distance healing. Participants will also learn to how to create a Reiki Crystal Grid and will participate in a guided meditation to meet their shadow component. At the end of the course, students will incorporate the Reiki symbols to give and receive a full Reiki session and to send a distance healing as a second degree Reiki practitioner. Certificate and materials provided to each student. Please bring a blanket, pillow and lunch to class.

Reiki III: Master
Building on First Degree Reiki Training and Second Degree Reiki Training (or if you have taken these levels with another instructor), this course teaches Reiki practitioners about three additional sacred Reiki symbols to access healing on a spiritual level. Participants will use and receive advanced psychic healing techniques during this hands-on session. They will learn how to conduct a self-attunement and will participate in a past life regression. Certificate and materials provided to each student. Please bring a blanket, pillow and lunch to class.

Introduction to Wellness
This course is intended to explore general physiological concepts as they apply to physical fitness, nutrition, stress and overall wellness throughout life. All students will be afforded an opportunity to assess and generate a personal health-fitness profile, identifying strengths and weaknesses associated with physical fitness, nutrition, weight management and stress management. Behavior modification will be emphasized in this course as students learn to set realistic and achievable goals as they plan for safe methods of improving general wellness.

Learn to Meditate
This class offers a broad range of simple and effective exercises to calm the mind and get in touch with your inner self.  This class includes breathing and concentration exercises, creative visualization and the use of music and mantras.  This class will also provide an opportunity to develop one’s own personal program of meditation.  This will be held in a classroom setting.  If you wish to sit on the floor, please bring a yoga mat and blanket to class.

Do you want to learn to safely operate a personal watercraft or boat?

Our boating courses are short, one- or two-day training sessions. You will learn the basics of operating personal watercraft such as jet skis, sailboats, yachts and other recreational motorized vessels up to 65 feet in length in Connecticut waters. The newest requirements for towing skiers and tubes are also covered. 

The boating courses at CT State fulfill the mandatory training requirements for obtaining the  Connecticut Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation (CPWO). Students must attend all sessions to qualify for the CPWO. The course fee does not include the one-time lifetime DEEP license fee ($50).

Connecticut Childcare Course
The purpose of the American Red Cross Connecticut Child Care Course is to prepare individuals who work with children to prevent injuries, give immediate care to a suddenly ill or injured person until more advanced help arrives, recognize childhood communicable diseases, and identify safe action at the onset of illness. This class meets the State of Connecticut, Office of Early Childhood Regulatory Requirements for First Aid and Child Day Care Licensing Program. This is for existing childcare providers and those seeking to become childcare providers. Students will receive a certificate from the American Red Cross which is valid for two years. Please check with the State of CT Office of Early Childhood for a complete list of requirements for Child Day Care Providers. CT Childcare Participant Manual will be provided in class. Course Objectives: * To improve the quality of child care by training childcare staff in health, safety and child development. *To teach child care staff the basic first aid skills they need in order to care for an injured child or infant. * To train child care staff to reduce the risk of injuries in the child care setting * To train child care staff to reduce the risk of infectious diseases in the child care setting. * To provide child care staff with a working knowledge of common childhood illnesses and the care and management of illness in the child care setting.* To train childcare staff to recognize and report the signs of child abuse.

Babysitting Training - Ages 11-15 
Students will learn to care for children and babies and, upon successful completion, earn an American Red Cross babysitting certificate. Working with mannequins, they will learn safety rules, diapering, feeding, appropriate toys, and communication with parents. In order to be certified, students must attend both sessions and participate in all activities.

College for Kids programs, held on the Norwalk campus, are designed to stimulate young minds. These inspiring classes offer hands-on learning and a dynamic curriculum in courses that your kids will thrive in and enjoy.

The culinary arts are all about preparing and serving good food. If you would like to learn how to create elegant meals for your family and friends – or simply dishes that please the palate and provide nutrition – CT State offers “bite-sized” courses. You can start slow with basic recipes and keep it “short and sweet,” or move on to preparing a full-course dinner with just the right wine. Learn how to make seasonal and celebratory meals, too. Ours is a fun, low-pressure, hands-on kitchen.

You do not need to be a culinary professional to learn more about this functional and enjoyable life skill. Most courses are conveniently scheduled as single-session courses on either a weekday evening or a Saturday. A materials fee, in addition to the course fee, accompanies most courses to cover the cost of food supplies (the instructor’s out-of-pocket expense). Students generally go home with leftovers and recipes.

Artisan Chocolate Making
In this non-credit course, students will explore chocolate candy production, from how to temper melted chocolate, dipping, decorating and molding. Students will prepare center fillings and ganache’s. The hands-on class will make popular treats like bonbons, truffles and delicious chocolate delicacies.

French Macaron Class
Like to bake, but ready for a new challenge? Come learn the art of French Macarons! These meringue-based sandwich cookies can be tricky to learn but rewarding to master. Students will see a demonstration of the technique of making the cookie shells, then try making their own batch. We will also cover the typical fillings, including buttercream, chocolate ganache, and caramel. 

Holiday Cookies
The magic of the holidays begins with the classic plate of cookies. This is sure to be a jam-packed yet delightfully happy and fun culinary experience for all! The student will learn to bake classic sugar, gingerbread, and almond spritz cookies, along with tips and tricks to achieve the perfect crisp texture. The fun continues as you decorate and understand the techniques to layer icing, mix colors, line work, and detailing.

Old-World Breads
Old-World Breads are handcrafted, all-natural breads made without preservatives or enhancers. From simple ingredients to delicious Old-World flavors! Subjects include leavening agents - chemical to natural, multiple flour types – whole, shaping and cutting grains.

Pizza Making
Do you love to eat pizza? New Haven, CT is known for having some of the best pizza in the world and many claim that pizza itself originated in New Haven. Students in this class will get hands-on experience in the bakery, learning how to make pizza dough from scratch, shaping the dough, and working with a variety of classic and modern toppings.

Principles of Baking I
Introduces students to the basic techniques and procedures required to prepare baked goods in a commercial setting, with emphasis on ingredient identification/function, scaling and proper mixing methods. Hands-on laboratory training includes the basic techniques used to prepare bread, pies, cookies, cakes, and baked custards.

Principles of Food Preparation
Introduces techniques and procedures of basic cooking, including knife skills, culinary terminology, equipment usage, product identification and applied cooking techniques, as well as basic fabrication, practical sanitation, culinary math, soup, stock, and sauce preparation.  Prerequisite/Corequisite: HOSP 1109 Food Safety Certification

ServSafe Food Safety Certification
Presents sanitation, safety, and maintenance challenges encountered in the food service industry. Investigation of causes and prevention of food-borne illnesses. A National Restaurant Association (NRA) ServSafe ® Food Protection Manager certification will be awarded to students who pass the exam. (pass/fail course)

Spa Cuisine
Spa Cuisine helps to purify, hydrate and cleanse the body, providing a balance between detoxification and re-energizing, restoring it to health.  We will create a meal using healthful and hydrating foods while discussing how you can blend them into your life. Printed Recipes will be provided 

Tapas
Tapas are small plates based on Spanish cuisine that are often combined to create a meal or served with beverages. Join us as we celebrate a nibble-Spanish Style. We will make a few different kinds to share and enjoy with a Spanish-style beverage (non-alcoholic) and learn how you can adapt them for your own celebrations. Printed Recipes will be provided.

Introduction to Archaeology
This course introduces students to the anthropological field of archaeology, the study of past and present cultures through the material objects that humans create and utilize. Utilizing texts and experiential learning activities, the course explores the research methods, ethics, and theoretical concepts that archaeologists use to investigate, interpret, and conserve these material artifacts. Students learn the broad story of the human past and its relevance to contemporary human communities, drawing on examples from the archaeological record.

Want to learn to dance for your upcoming wedding or other special occasion? Looking for a fun activity to do with a friend or spouse, or maybe for a way to meet new people? Learn traditional ballroom dancing — or take a class in Latin merengue, bachata and salsa dance, Argentine tango, or perhaps line dance or swing dance. You may even want to learn ballet!

Chinese Classic Dance I (Beginner)

Chinese Classic Dance II (Intermediate)
This class is designed for students who are interested in learning classical and folk Chinese dance. The class will emphasize the footwork, hand styles, body postures and facial expressions. It will help in learning the Chinese language and culture through dancing. In addition, the dance class will include dance stretch and flexibility to help with dance movements.

Dance Stretch and Performance Ages 9-15
This class is designed to increase muscle strength and flexibility. Through entire-body stretching, students can strongly enhance their range of motion and prepare themselves for dance classes. This class also includes dance performances at local libraries and museums. Note: tuition does not include an additional performance fee.

In this course, theater students produce a play. This course offers a comprehensive introduction to QuickBooks, the industry-leading accounting software used by small and medium-sized businesses worldwide. Designed for beginners with no prior accounting or QuickBooks experience, this course will guide you through the fundamental features and functions of QuickBooks, enabling you to efficiently manage your financial records.  Set up and manage a QuickBooks company, manage financial transactions, bank reconciliations, financial reporting.

Fundamentals of Investing
This course is essential for anyone who wants to learn about different investment asset classes and how they can work for you.  You will learn the language of investing as you begin to understand the meaning and use of cash equivalents, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and annuities. Once you know what the asset classes are and how they work together, we will review simple strategies you can use for a lifetime of investing.

Estate Planning
This session gives a basic introduction to estate planning and includes discussion of wills, trusts, federal and state estate taxes, as well as estate planning in both the probate and non-probate contexts.  The goal is to familiarize students with the concepts, framework, and vocabulary of estate planning so that they can approach their own estate planning situations in an informed manner.

Estate Planning (Online)
Life circumstances can change in an instant. If they do, are you prepared? In this course, you’ll learn about wills, trusts, powers of attorney (POA), and healthcare directives. You’ll walk away understanding what these documents are for, and what you need to do to create yours. Even if you have already created an estate plan, learn if you should have your existing documents reviewed and updated. All students will receive an easy-to-understand estate planning guidebook written by our attorneys. Long-Term Care and Incapacity Planning
Learn about planning for long-term care services and incapacity, with a special emphasis on home care and community-based services. This session will give an overview of long-term care programs, including Medicare, Medicaid and long-term care insurance, and will review the rules and programs available for receiving care at home, as well as skilled nursing facility care. The session also includes a discussion of planning for incapacity, including living wills, health care proxies, and powers of attorney.

Creating the Ultimate Retirement Income Plan

Abs and Lower Body will target your core using both cardiovascular and muscle building exercises. This class will incorporate the use of a variety of equipment including steps, bands, and BOSUs (Balance Trainers). You will be challenged with functional moves including squats, lunges and planks using your own body weight to give you a strong and fit core.

Functional Fitness
This course focuses on increasing students present fitness levels through functional fitness. Participation in this course may lead to increased energy, mental clarity, and health as a part of one's lifestyle. It will also teach students to recognize proper form and technique. This course may also provide opportunities for students to increase their cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility and/or develop strength and muscular endurance. Students will develop a basic understanding of the components of group exercise and will acquire the skills to recognize a safe and effective exercise class. Students will have an opportunity to observe and critique a certified exercise instructor to gain a greater understanding of the role of that individual in successful group exercises.

Pilates Mat Based
Pilates will challenge deep abdominal muscles to support the core, create a stronger, more flexible spine as well as promote recovery from strain or injury. Pilates conditions the entire body with a non-impact approach suitable for all ages and abilities.

Strength and Tone
Strength and Tone is a challenging course designed to build muscular strength and endurance using light weights, medicine balls, and resistance bands. This total body class will help sculpt and tone your muscles, help you build lean muscle and boost your metabolism, all while you have a fun time doing it.

Yoga I
This studio course is designed to introduce students to the methods and skills necessary to understand and perform Yoga. Relaxation techniques and flexibility are stressed.

Do you have a green thumb? CT State can help you cultivate your interest in gardening, with basic courses to advanced topics. Learn organic lawn care, organic vegetable gardening, how to get the most out of container gardening (this class is perfect for people who have very small to no yard at all), and much more. All About Seeds for Native Plants in Your Garden
Seeds of native plants differ from seeds of vegetables or non-native perennials and annuals.  They need very different conditions to germinate.  In the first session of this class, we will explore the history and nature of seeds, how they evolved and how each type of seed differs from the others. We'll discuss how and when to collect them, how to prepare them for sowing and/or storage, and which requirements encourage their growth. Our second session will be a workshop. We will select seeds to plant and will get them ready for germination.  All materials will be provided.  Finished products will go home to germinate on your patio or balcony and by summer you will have some small seedlings to either up-pot or directly plant into your garden!  Based on your new knowledge, you'll be ready to collect seeds for the following growing season and can propagate them yourself to expand your garden's native plants at little cost to you and at great benefit to wildlife!

Native Plant Solutions to Invasives: Lecture and Garden Tour

Kitchen Design: A Case Study
Explore real-life kitchen design projects as case studies for your own potential projects. We will discuss challenges, design solutions and materials. Participate in an in-class, mock design challenge: students will be given a specific design brief and scenario, and we will work together to create solutions. One kitchen will potentially be selected for our design challenge from class attendee submissions. Conversational Spanish I
This course is designed for those who want a basic working grammar in Spanish in order to be able to use it in conversation. Special emphasis is placed on pronunciation and conversation. Situations and dialogues will be used to practice basic grammatical concepts and to instill a feel for the structure of the language.  Students need a high school level language for this class, not necessarily Spanish.

Conversational Italian Beginner
This course for beginners is designed for the practical use of the language in a variety of everyday situations.  The conversation and reading text will help the student to discover the essentials of Italian grammar in a pleasant and natural sequence.  

Conversational Italian Intermediate
This course is designed for students who have taken Conversational Italian I or who have an elementary knowledge of Italian.  They will review the basics of Italian grammar and be encouraged to speak and enrich their vocabulary through role-playing, games, discussions, and readings.  Prerequisite:  Beginning Italian 

Elementary French I
An introduction to the French language and French-speaking cultures with emphasis on the development of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing in order to prepare students for successful entry into the target language. This is a beginning course for students who have had very limited or no prior study of this language. This is a four-credit course with an embedded language lab component.

Elementary French II
A continuation of Elementary French I, this course builds upon previous introduction to the French language and French-speaking cultures with a continued emphasis on the development of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This is the second part to the beginning sequence for students who have had some prior study of this language either in high school, Elementary French I or life experience. This is a four-credit course with an embedded language lab component.

Intermediate Italian I
This course is for students who have already attained a working knowledge of the language. Students continue to develop and strengthen speaking and listening comprehension and reading and writing skills, as well as learn more about Italian-speaking cultures. Students are introduced to cultural and literary materials that will develop an appreciation of the arts, history, culture, and the literature of Italian-speaking peoples and create an awareness of cultural, social, and linguistic differences and similarities. Instruction focuses on oral and written communication. This course has an embedded language lab component.

Elementary German I
An introduction to the German language and German-speaking cultures with emphasis on development of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing in order to prepare students for successful entry into the target language. This beginning course for students who have had very limited or no prior study to this language. This is a four-credit class with an embedded lab component offered a non-credit version.

Elementary German II
A continuation of Elementary German I, this course builds upon the previous introduction to the German language and German-speaking cultures with a continued emphasis on the development of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This is the second part of the beginning sequence for students who have had some prior study of this language either in high school, Elementary German I or life experience. This course is a performance ensemble in which students will study and perform choral repertoire representing a variety of styles and historical periods, from the Renaissance to the postmodern age. Music Discussion Series: The History of Rock ‘n’ Roll in 25 Songs
Join us for an engaging discussion of the history of rock 'n’ roll from the 1950s until today. Using Your Digital SLR (On Campus)
This class will focus on the specifics of using a digital SLR and will answer many of the questions on how to get the most out of your camera. Topics will include choosing the proper file format and resolution, compression, lenses, white balance, color space, exposure compensation, saturation and contrast controls. Classroom presentations and hands-on experience will help you to learn about your camera and the use of the RAW file format. Students will learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to download images and process RAW files, as well as essential tools for processing digital photographs. Students should bring their own digital SLR camera to class.

Advanced Digital SLR
Advanced photographic topics relating to digital SLRs will include improving images with Adobe Photoshop CC, as demonstrated by the instructor; focusing on exposure and image quality-control in a variety of challenging lighting situations, including creative use of on-and off-camera flash units; color correction; masking techniques; nondestructive editing; and learning through instructor demonstration how to use Photoshop to explore the digital imaging workflow. Some elements of Adobe Camera RAW will also be covered. Students should have their digital SLR camera handy. 

iPhone Photography
Learn how to get the most out of your iPhone features by shooting, editing and sharing photographs. That’s right, using only your iPhone, you will develop these photographic skills! Learn simple tips and tricks that will take your photography to the next level: how to adjust and edit photos, how to download photo apps and use them, and how to import, save and share photos. Campus Photo Walk - Using Your Digital Camera or iPhone
Take a photo walk with your camera around the campus, inside and outside, while you learn about camera controls and work hands-on with aperture, shutter speed, exposure settings, and more. Learn to eliminate distractions, use line and texture, and employ the rules of thirds to create dynamic photographic compositions. There will be opportunities to ask technical and creative questions and learn the skills and techniques you need to improve your photography. Open to all levels of experience. Architectural CAD
This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of architectural planning, design, and drawing production. Topics include: drawing layouts, floor plan development, elevation views, renderings, material specifications, and building code requirements.

CAD 3D Arch Parametric
This course introduces students to a 3D parametric computer-aided design platform where students gain operational and productivity knowledge using industry-common parametric software. 

CAD 3D Architectural
Applies engineering and technological principles to the design of residential and light commercial structures. Students will create architectural drawings and three-dimensional models using AutoCAD software.

Entrepreneurship
This course introduces the student to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship. The students will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to research and begin a small business. Explores opportunity analysis, startup-expenses, forms of business ownership, site selection, and sources of funding. Student's research and compare buying an existing business, starting a new business and franchising. Also review human resources, marketing, management, accounting and legal aspects of business.

Introduction to AutoCAD 
This is an introductory course for people that have no experience in Computer Aided Drawing using AutoCAD software, and is of particular interest to Architects, Engineers, Contractors, Cabinet Makers, Landscape and Interior Designers. Students must be knowledgeable in basic computer use. Topics will include basic AutoCAD drawing commands, text creation, scale factors of drawing and dimensioning techniques, layers, line weight usage, fundamental drafting technique, drawing management, hatching, block usage, and creating symbol library for multiple uses. Students will be able to draw all aspects of a small Cape Cod house design from conception to all phases of a working drawing set for construction, including floor plans, elevations, sections, kitchen cabinets, and details. And finally printing the project out on their own designed title block with proper drawing layouts. This course will give the student the basic skills and ability to draw anything they want. Each student has his own PC workstation for the instruction. Please bring a flash drive to class. A PC-based student version of the software is provided for homework. Class will be instructed on a PC platform, and MAC usage is possible but not instructed due to the different interface. We will be using the latest version of AutoCAD.

2D CAD (AutoCAD)
The objective of this course is to give the student a basic understanding of Computer Aided Drafting using the latest version of AutoCAD. The student will learn drafting fundamentals for engineering through projects from various technical disciplines. Topics include drawing setup, text, dimensioning, layering systems, blocks, printing and plotting, orthographic and isometric, and section views as well. Upon finishing this course, students should be able to prepare drawings in their own engineering disciplines. One hour of class work; four hours of laboratory. The class will meet Tuesdays on campus and also online.

Parametric Design (Solidworks)
Introduction to computer-based design using SolidWorks® parametric 3D CAD software. The course focuses on Parametric Modeling and topics include: Design Intent and Process, Sketching Techniques, Model Development Techniques, Process-Specific Modeling, Design Changes, Editing Models, Patterning and Assembly Techniques. Students will participate in mostly individual and some group design projects as appropriate.

Public Speaking
In this introductory course to Public Speaking, students will engage in the process of transmitting ideas and information orally in a variety of situations. Effective oral communication involves generating messages and delivering them with attention to vocal variety, articulation, and nonverbal signals. In order to be a competent speaker, a person must be able to compose a message and provide ideas and information suitable to the topic, purpose, and audience.

Python
This course offers an introduction to Python and its applications in industry and academia.  Python is an interpreted, object-oriented high-level programming language and can be used for creating Windows, UNIX and Mac applications, from simple console and web-based to elaborate graphic inter[1]faces for video games. Python standard packages such as Numpy, Scipy, and Scikit-learn offer a range of modern methods for big data analysis and machine learning and constantly expand their capabilities. Students will explore applications of Python for machine learning, data analysis and computer-aided decision making, business and finance. This course is project based. Students may work in groups or individually. Please bring a flash drive to class. Prerequisites: Intermediate Algebra and basic programming skills (in any language) are required.

Introduction to Human Service Skills
This course is for those seeking entry-level positions providing direct service to clients or who are new to the field of human services and helping professions. Case management, client-human service work relationships, informed consent, confidentiality, ecological systems model, cultural competence, helping attitudes, setting boundaries, and communication skills will be covered through lectures, discussion and questions and answers. Required for this online course: Internet access and computer; microphone and webcam needed. This course will be taught using Webex. The instructor will contact students with further instructions one to three business days prior to class.
