Growing up, my sister was the artist in the family. She was in Advanced Placement art classes, attended a very selective art camp and minored in Fine Arts in college. I always loved being creative, but never considered myself an artist the way my sister was, and never in a million years thought I could make a career out of it.

When the time came to declare my college major, I pursued a bachelor’s degree in International Development, and after graduation worked in the field for a number of years. But the creative bug never stopped biting, and I finally decided to see if there was something to it. I enrolled in two classes at NCC to see what Graphic Design was all about, and if I had what it took to make a career out of it. In my courses, I found myself surrounded by people with a wide variety of back stories, some just like my own. My professors were all talented creatives with years of experience in their fields and vast knowledge of current design trends and necessary skill sets. I took classes outside of work for nearly a year before deciding it was time to finish my degree and really pursue a career in Graphic Design—so I jumped, and quit my job.

During my time in the program, I learned invaluable skills and built a portfolio that I was proud to show to potential employers. I worked with the Art, Architecure + Design department as a lab monitor, helping other students with projects and answering any technical questions they had outside of class, which further expanded my knowledge and skills. I was also able to complete design projects for local organizations and government agencies, some of whom I continued to work with once my degree was completed. After graduating, I freelanced for a few months using connections I made through my time at NCC before accepting a full time role as Graphic Design Manager at a design agency. Using what I learned at NCC, I can confidently manage a team of other designers and interns, and can finally say that I truly love my job. The knowledge and experience I gained from my classes, professors and opportunities at NCC informs my work every day, and I tell anyone who will listen how worthwhile it was to make that leap into a career that I’m excited about. I’m so glad I chose NCC to be the catalyst for the enormous change that brought me here, and looking back would not have done it any other way.
