Greta Bush, Graphic Design Certificate, 2010

Alabama Health Poster, NASA
While working in the non-profit field, I took the first step to change my career and follow my passion for art in 2009. Admittedly, it took me a while to realize that I could make a living doing what I enjoy most, and I feel that NCC was a perfect fit for my needs. The Graphic Design Certificate program, designed for students who already have an undergraduate degree in any other topic, allowed me to seamlessly train and transition into the graphic design field.

Shortly after completing my degree I was fortunate enough to be hired as a paid intern for a NASA Science Mission Directorate Applied Sciences program at Langley Research Center called DEVELOP. One of my projects was to design posters that highlighted some of their former interns as well as students’ projects for the American Aeronautical Society’s 49th Robert H. Goddard Memorial Symposium held at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD.

This design process involved many people, including non-designers who initiated the project, a staff designer who mentored me, and the NASA communications department who approved the final designs. This project quickly became a priority and I had a week and a half working part-time to complete the designs. My color choices were inspired by the color scheme of a previous poster that had prompted this project. While the two series of posters highlight different topics, they both relate to DEVELOP, and so I repeated the color treatment and curved lines to unite the posters, but the variations in the backgrounds make them distinctly different. While my font choices and use of the NASA logo followed the official style guidelines, I was challenged to design the layout in a way that looked professional and appealing. Ultimately, I was able to apply my aesthetic sensibility while incorporating required content within NASA’s design guidelines. As a recent grad, this was a great experience for me.

After my internship at NASA ended, I moved to Asheville, NC. After a few months of volunteering to do graphics work for Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity I was hired as a full time staff member. My new position is titled Communications Coordinator; I will continue to do graphics work for Habitat in addition to other marketing and PR tasks. It’s rewarding for me to look back and see how my decision to go back to school at NCC really paid off: I’m now able to combine my passion for non-profit work with my artistic passion. NCC really facilitated this change for me and I feel so fortunate to have a job doing what I love.
