ESL Placement Test

ESL Placement Testing

In most cases, if your first language is not English, you will be required to take the ESL placement test.

What is the purpose of the test?

The test is not a comprehensive evaluation of your English proficiency. Instead, the test is designed only to put you into an appropriate English course, either an ESL class or English 101. Usually, therefore, you take the test only once, when you enter NCC. If results show that your English skills are not high enough for credit courses, you may enroll in our non-credit ESL program. Non-credit courses are offered by Extended Studies, which can be reached at (203) 857-7080.

What do I need to do before the test?

1. Fill out an application for admission to the college:

a. online here: ONLINE APPLICATION (Visa or MasterCard is required to pay a $20 application fee)
** If you do not have a Social Security Number, please apply in person. See below. **

b. in person at the Admissions Office on the East Campus. Pay a $20 application fee. Application forms can be downloaded from here: APPLICATION FORM

You must receive a student number.

2. Sign up for the ESL Placement Test:

a. online here: SCHEDULE AN ESL TEST

When are tests held?

ESL placement testing begins in March and continues through the end of August. We usually offer test sessions at convenient day and evening times on Monday through Thursday. Exact days and times for tests are determined a month or so in advance. To find out the current schedule, click here: SCHEDULE AN ESL TEST.

What is the test like?

The ESL placement test has two parts:

  • 1. An essay
  • 2. Multiple-choice questions on grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure

You will take the multiple-choice portion on a computer, but you do not need computer experience. If you are not familiar with using a keyboard and a mouse, you will be given a brief orientation at the time of the test. Throughout the test session a proctor will be present if you have any questions.

Do I have to take any other placement tests?

If your ESL level is high enough, you are eligible to take other courses in NCC's regular curriculum and if you would like to do so, we will need to evaluate your math skills. After your ESL test session, the proctor will give you information about scheduling a math placement test.
