Medical Office Specialist Course Descriptions

BBG 101 Introduction to Business – 3 credits

Prerequisite: eligibility for ENG 084

As a platform for other business courses, this introductory course places business in perspective by surveying it in a contemporary manner and by offering students a solid foundation in the various disciplines of business. It provides a conceptual understanding of our capitalistic society, accounting management, human resources, marketing, finance and controls.


BBG 114 Business Applications Software – 4 credits

Prerequisite:  Eligibility for ENG 101

A hands-on course which provides an in-depth study and coverage of business applications software providing practical experience with spreadsheet, word processing, presentation, database, and other current packages.  Emphasis in the course will focus on using the microcomputer as a business tool.  Supervised exercises or individual and group assignments are required. 


HIM 155 Fundamentals of Clinical Informatics and Electronic Medical Records -3 credits

Prerequisites: MED 125 and CSA 105 or BBG 114

This course is meant to give the participant an inside look at Clinical Informatics related to systems and processes for collecting and maintaining patient health information.   This course offers consumers interested in the obtaining knowledge of health information systems and records an introduction to the use of basic electronic medical record systems. This course includes an overview of Health Information Systems, terminology, data management, and regulatory concepts.  Hands on learning will occur in the laboratory setting using systems designed for both ambulatory and acute care settings.  The course is intended to inform the general public and/or offer a broad overview to health workers or information technology specialists who are interested in this field.


MED 125 Medical Terminology – 3 credits

Prerequisite:  Eligible for English 101

This course is a comprehensive study of the technical language of medicine through word construction. The student will learn the anatomic and clinical medical terms, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic testing, and pharmacological agents pertaining to each body system.


MED 112 Medical Insurance and Billing – 3 credits

Prerequisite or co-requisite: MED 125

This course will cover the clerical and administrative skills necessary to work effectively in a private physician’s office, a multi-specialty clinic, or a hospital setting.  These skills include maintaining patients’ medical records including color-coding.  Filing will also be discussed.  This course will cover the important issues regarding healthcare today.  They include healthcare reform, the changing skills required for success and the computerization of medical offices with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.)  This course will introduce the student to the major medical insurance programs used in physician offices and give a basic knowledge of the national diagnostic and procedural coding systems and forms.


MED 217 Medical Coding – 3 credits

Prerequisite or co-requisite: MED 125

This course encompasses most aspects of fundamentals of the Official Coding and Reporting Guidelines used by providers to facilitate payment of health services.  Students access the Internet to research and apply coding concepts and conventions of ICD-9 and CPT-4 as they review actual medical records.  A hands-on experience is provided with current medical practice management software application.


COM 173 Public Speaking – 3 credits

Prerequisite:  Eligible for English 101

The course introduces students to the communication techniques needed to organize and deliver oral messages in a public setting, with emphasis on extemporaneous speeches that inform, demonstrate and persuade.  Basic communication theory, including reasoning patterns and logical fallacies, is covered. 


MED 295 Cooperative Education Work Experience – 3 credits


  • GPA of 2.2 or higher
  • Interview with Medical Office Coordinator or designee
  • Completed 15 credits in course requirements for Medical Office Specialist Certificate including:
    • Medical Terminology
    • Medical Insurance and Billing

This course combines a classroom seminar with on the job learning. Students who meet program eligibility work at approved Cooperative Education sites and participate in regularly scheduled seminars. Seminars cover the establishment of learning goals for the work assignment, work-related problem solving, and legal and ethical dilemmas facing health care personnel. A final project is designed to incorporate on the-job learning and medical law and ethics. Students must complete the seminar, all assignments, the final project, and the clinical work assignment to receive credit.
